Summer Vacation 2016 Day 1

And so, another summer trip begins. While we do have some specific travel plans to go back and visit our favorite US destinations, we really are going to try to be open to new spots. And we’re starting with Montgomery, Alabama.

Amazingly, after almost 18,000 miles, we really only had one malfunction with our travel trailer and that was our hitch breaking, on the first weekend that we had it in 2015. Quite naturally, we were due for something…and that “something” was a flat tire.

Thankfully, God allowed us to get off of the major highway before it happened. And, we broke down right in front of the home of an out-of-work mechanic, who had just pulled in to his driveway.

This altered our driving time a bit but nonetheless, we still made good time to Montgomery, Alabama.

We stopped to take a pic at the same state sign from a year ago. Check out the difference.

I would say that Mackenzie has grown a bit, ha!!

We pulled into our site for the next couple of nights, right before sunset. Oh, how peaceful and tranquil it was! Not to mention, BEAUTIFUL!!!

The city of Montgomery is full of rich history, friendly people, and humongous flying bugs!!! We stepped back in time on a tour of the events surrounding the arrest of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott at the Rosa Parks Museum and Library.

It was pretty surreal to be at the very spot where she was arrested for simply “sitting for what was right”.

Down the street, there is a water fountain memorial, honoring those who gave their lives during the civil rights movement at the Civil Rights Memorial.

Less than 2 blocks away is the iconic Dexter Street Baptist Church, where many uplifting and encouraging sermons where given, in spite of the many attacks of its members and the church itself.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was also the pastor at this church and he made plans for the Bus Boycott in the basement, just yards away from the Alabama State Capitol.

We even ran into friends of ours, who we haven’t seen in 5 years! Amazing that we ran into them here! Small World…

Anytime that we are in a historic area, it seems that we have a craving for some good barbecue. We had to go see if the bbq here had anything on the bbq in Memphis!

After a fulfilling lunch, we took a nice stroll along the riverfront.

Montgomery is such a beautiful city and I can’t believe we waited so long to visit. We will definitely be back!!

We couldn’t have planned a more perfect way to start off our 2016 Summer Vacation! Thank you all for praying for us and for following us along this journey 🙂 #Thomas6travels
